As you may know, your AC and heating system doesn’t draw in fresh outdoor air. Instead, air conditioners remove hot air from your indoor space to cool your home. Ventilation systems create a constant flow of fresh air indoors.
The “V” in HVAC stands for ventilation. Ventilation circulates air throughout a space and removes pollutants, providing adequate airflow and indoor air quality.
Without it, your indoor air quality would decline, leading to potential health issues.
For example, poor indoor air quality may result in the following:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Allergies
- Respiratory diseases
- Cognitive decline
If you live in hot and humid Tampa, ventilation systems dilute moist air, improving indoor air quality. Adequate ventilation prevents mold, bacteria growth, and potential health concerns.
Humid and contaminated air is not what we hope to achieve. To help you, our Action Air Conditioning HVAC specialists have provided you with a simple guide on ventilation systems.
Good Ventilation Systems Ensure Energy-Efficient Spaces
Homes and office spaces are becoming more and more energy-efficient. Besides having a lower electricity bill, this also means your property becomes air-tight inside. A room without drafts or air leaks is also one without a healthy flow of oxygen. Without a proper ventilation system installed, you would need to open windows and doors frequently. If you cannot do so, the air inside your home will become stuffy and toxic. As you breathe, cook, clean, and bathe, your indoor air quality will slowly decline and so can your health.
This is why it’s crucial for homeowners and commercial property owners to invest in a quality ventilation system. Opening windows and doors in humid Florida weather might bring in clean air, but it will also be filled with high levels of moisture that can promote mold and bacteria growth.
Hot humid air is far from the fresh cool comfort we hope to achieve in our homes, especially during the Summer. You need the right balance all year round; air that is both fresh and crisp.
And to achieve that, you need an efficient and well-maintained ventilation system.
How Do Ventilation Systems Work?
Ventilation systems introduce clean air into a living space. Depending on the system, it pressurizes or depressurizes the air. This will either force air in or draw fresh air into the home. The air mixes with, dilutes, or displaces the pre-existing air to provide ventilation. While the direction and method for accomplishing this may differ, the end goal is the same.
Types of Ventilation: Natural Ventilation Vs. Mechanical Ventilation
There are two types of ventilation: natural and mechanical. They both create airflow throughout your home, improving indoor air quality.
Natural ventilation uses sources like a door or window to ventilate a space. However, providing adequate airflow using natural methods would require extensive effort.
In contrast, mechanical ventilation uses fans to move air inside or outside. Mechanical ventilation is necessary to ensure controlled temperature and humidity in your home.
Mechanical Ventilation Types
When comparing natural to mechanical ventilation, it’s obvious which choice is superior. However, you still have a few options when selecting mechanical ventilation.
The key types of mechanical ventilation consist of:
Supply-Only
Supply-only ventilation uses a fan to pressurize and force air into your home. Supply ventilation pushes fresh air inside, creating positive pressure. This prevents moisture buildup and minimizes outdoor pollutants. It consists of a fan and duct systems to provide better control of the air that enters. Supply ventilation also filters and conditions air before distributing it through the home. Supply systems are most beneficial for hot and mixed climates.
Exhaust-Only
Exhaust-only ventilation removes unwanted air through depressurization. The system consists of a single fan connected to a single exhaust point. The exhaust fans suck the air from these points and send them outdoors.
The problem is that exhaust-only systems do not provide a dedicated source of fresh air. Exhausting air without a way to replace it causes the house to equalize this pressure on its own. The home draws outside air through leaks and vents to compensate for lost air. As a result, the negative pressure from depressurization leads to an imbalance. This increases the risk of combustion or dangerous gasses entering the home.
Along with pressure imbalances, exhaust systems may draw in pollutants such as:
- Radon
- Mold
- Dust
- Fumes from an attached garage
- Gasses from a fireplace or a fossil-fuel-fired water heater
Poor air quality may cause discomfort, sleep issues, and breathing problems. In hot and humid climates, these systems would not be effective. That’s why these systems are best for cold temperatures.
Balanced Ventilation
In comparison, balanced ventilation systems neither pressurize nor depressurize the home. Instead, they mix equal amounts of fresh outside air and polluted inside air. They have two fans and two duct systems, but you can install a fresh air supply and exhaust vents in every room.
Balanced ventilation systems effectively control indoor pollutants and provide good indoor air quality. Balanced systems supply outside air. They allow filters to remove dust and pollen before entering the house. Due to their capabilities, they work in all climates.
Energy Recovery Ventilation
Energy Recovery Ventilation (ERV) and Supply Ventilation. ERV systems exchange heat and moisture between incoming fresh and outgoing stale air. They help maintain a comfortable temperature and humidity. ERVs provide controlled ventilation while minimizing energy losses. To reduce costs in the winter, they transfer heat from the warm inside exhaust air to the cold outside air. Then, in the summer, the inside air cools the warmer (supply) air, reducing cooling costs. These features make ERVs effective for hot and cold climates.
