HVAC Systems: AC Split System vs Packaged

If you plan to install a new air conditioning unit for your HVAC system, it may surprise you to learn that there is more than brands and models to consider. A cooling expert will help you determine if you need a split system or a packaged unit first.

When a technician from Action Air Conditioning comes to your home in the Tampa Bay area for consultation, we help you decide what type of air conditioning system is right for your unique situation.

If you have limited space inside the property, an all-in-one system outdoors might be the best solution. But if you have ample space, you’re better off with a more efficient system that has multiple components, one indoor and one outdoor.

Do you want a better understanding of why your consultant recommends a particular HVAC system? We get it! You need to know exactly how it benefits you.

That’s why we have created a guide that compares the AC split system vs packaged units. We try to inform and involve our customers in the cooling system installation process as much as possible. After all, it’s an investment in your comfort!

Packaged Unit Systems

Some houses don’t have attics and the furnace is snug as a bug, tucked in a utility closet. Others have moisture issues that could spell trouble for indoor cooling equipment.

When an indoor coil would be difficult, impossible, or simply inconvenient for the residents of the home, a packaged unit can be an excellent option.

A packaged unit contains all the equipment of a split system, including the:

  • Evaporator Coils
  • Condenser Coils
  • Condenser Fan Motor
  • Compressor
  • Fan
  • Metering Device

Every component sits outside of the house in one big box or “package”.

The fan draws warm air in your home into the unit. As air passes through the evaporator coils, it is cooled. Then it moves through the ductwork and into your home again.

Even though it’s a simpler design, packaged units are not efficient in Florida. This means they will have a higher impact on your energy consumption than an AC split system. Because of this extra expense, we recommend that you avoid choosing them over split systems when possible.

Split System ACs

A split cooling system separates its components, locating some inside and outside your house. The evaporator unit and metering device remain indoors while the compressor unit stays outside to release refrigerant heat as it passes through the compressor coils.

With this design, only the parts of your HVAC system that need to be outside are exposed to the elements. We install the other components in an attic, utility closet, or available living space where they have protection from the weather.

AC Split System vs Packaged, Which Cooling System is Best?

When comparing an AC split system vs packaged units, there is no contest. If you have room to spare inside of your house, a split system is superior.

Why?

Heat, humidity, and severe weather will put strain on equipment outdoors, making it work harder. This additional stress causes packaged unit systems to be less efficient.

But when half of it is sitting inside of your home, it’s shielded from the elements, especially the scorching heat during summer. Split systems sit comfortably in the safety of your home where it is cooler. They don’t have to work as hard as packaged units that run in sweltering conditions.

And when your AC works less, it uses less energy! Less energy consumption is good news for your electric bill and the environment.
