Air Conditioning Savings

July 28th, 2011

There are many ways to save money on your air conditioning bill during a down economy. Raising the temperature (during summer months) on the thermostat when no one is home and lowering it during the winter months. This will prevent your air conditioner from coming on when no one is home. Replacing your mercury thermostat with a new digital thermostat or even with a programmable thermostat. Replacing your old air conditioner with a new and more efficient one will help cut down your electric bill.

Let’s start with the cheapest solutions up to the more expensive ones. By simply raising or lowering your thermostat while no one is at home can dramatically save money on your electric bill. The temperature only has to raised or lowered about 5 degrees. It will still be comfortable in your house when you get home.

Updating your older thermostat to a newer one would be the next solution. Mercury thermostats tend to be less accurate with the temperature of the house then digital ones. A mercury thermostat will cause your air conditioner to run when it is not necessary. This in essence is wasting electric and costing you money. A programmable thermostat can have a schedule set for everyday during the week at different times of the day. The homeowner will never have to worry about their air conditioner coming on when no one is home once the initial set up is done.

A third option is a Trane thermostat that can be controlled through the internet. This is the newest and latest technology on the market and offered through Trane dealers. A schedule can be set online to have the thermostat come on and off at certain times of the day. It can also be turned on or off when needed through the internet. All of this can also be accessible through the app for smart phones or a web enabled phone. This thermostat can function on any air conditioning system (not limited to Trane only). Imagine turning on your air conditioner on your way home and arriving to a nice cool home. This is only one of the many benefits of home automation.

The Trane Xl20i is a leader in the industry for air conditioners. It has dual compressors (a big one and a small one). This is useful for when it is extremely hot outside and the temperature needs to get cool in the house. In this instance the big compressor will turn on until the thermostat is satisfied and then the little compressor will maintain the temperature in the house. Doing this helps cut the cost of electric used for the air conditioner.

The most efficient and biggest savings would be combining the Trane XL20i and the Trane (home automation) thermostat. The air conditioner would not need to work as hard if the temp. in the house only has to come down a little. Being able to control this through the internet you would be able to know exactly how long your unit is on and off. Overall, there are many options to cutting down costs on electric. Ductless Air Conditioner

July 8th, 2011

A ductless air conditioner is also referred to as a mini split. This means that it can provide air conditioning for a room of a house without having to put any holes in your ceiling. It is essentially a mini air conditioner made to cool or heat only a small portion of a house. The air handler is hung on the wall inside and the condenser is usually located outside of the house close to the air handler.

These are very useful when a room or area of a house has a hard time cooling down in the summer or heating up in the winter. Maybe you don’t use that part of the house and only need air conditioning for certain times of the year or events that take place. A screened in porch that has been remodeled and is now enclosed (a sun room) would be an ideal situation for a ductless AC. This way you are not wasting air conditioning out there when no one is in the sun room. It is also useful for additions that are made to a house or even for flat roofs where duct work cannot be used.

There are many different brands of mini split systems. How do you know which is the best for your house. Maybe price is an issue or you’re on a budget and cannot spend a whole lot of money. Then a GE mini split is an option to consider. But if price is not an issue and you are looking for the best then a Mitsubishi would be your best option. A Mitsubishi would be compared to a Trane in the mini split air conditioning world. They have the best warranty, they are reliable, their SEER ( ranging from 19-26) blows all other competitors out of the water and they are extremely quiet.

Sizing an Air Conditioner for Your Home

April 13th, 2011

What is the correct size unit for your house? There are many different sizes of AC units ranging from a one ton AC up to a five ton for residential. There are a few factors that contribute to which size system is ideal for your house.

The best insulated house can have one ton of air per 1,000 square feet and the worst insulated house it is recommended 500 square feet per ton. Since most houses are neither of these two options, it would only make sense to pick the middle. The ideal size would be 700 square feet per ton. This may not always be correct and is to be used just as a guide line.

Different factors may also play an important key role in the size of the air conditioning system required for your house.
Some of these factors may include:
1. How many windows are located in the sun?
2. Are there trees around your house giving it shade?
3. Do you like it to be (below 75°) cold in your house?

NEVER EVER get an air conditioner too big thinking it will cool your house better. Remember it is better to undersize the AC unit then to oversize. If the unit is too big then it can not do its job by removing the humidity out of the house making it more comfortable for you. It will cool the house quicker, but it will feel sticky or damp in the house (especially in hot/humid states).

Air Conditioning Install

March 14th, 2011

Our well trained install department is top notch in the industry. The lead guys have been with Action Air for over 10 years. They know exactly what to do and how to make the customer pleased. It usually only takes our company install team one day to replace an air conditioning system. Most companies will spend multiple days to install an AC unit that only takes us one day. This is very convenient during those long hot summer days.

At Action Air we send out two guys on a job unless the job is big (if the job considers having to replace duct work then we will have three or four guys on the job). Our team is efficient enough that we usually don’t have to send out many people to a job. They will clean up any mess before they leave the job and make sure you (the customer) are completely happy with the install.

Central Air Conditioning Rating

January 3rd, 2011

Every central air conditioner has a SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) rating that is regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy. No central air conditioner can have lower then a 13 SEER required by U.S. law to be manufactured. Therefore a central air conditioner can usually range from 13 to about 20 SEER.

Most people don’t understand what exactly the SEER rating means. The easiest way to explain it is to compare the SEER ratings to a cars mpg. Some cars get 15 miles per gallon and others get 30 mpg. Most people wouldn’t think twice about buying the car that gets 30 mpg. This car that gets more mpg and is going to end up saving you more money in the end even though it may cost a little more money in the begging.

Remember depending on the climate and location of where a consumer lives the air conditioner can be one of the most essential things for a home. For instance, because we live in Florida we should take into account an air conditioner rating serious when going to purchase a new system. Nine out of the 12 months in a year it is hot and humid. The air conditioner is going be used almost non stop most of the year. This is why it is crucial to understand the SEER rating before purchasing a new central air conditioning system.

Effects of Air Pollution in Humans

November 9th, 2010

Keeping the air clean in a house could be one of the toughest things for a consumer to maintain. There are many different effects of air pollution on humans that can be prevented. The fact is that the air in a house is dirtier than the air outside.

Some of the effects of air pollution in humans can result in headaches, nausea, and allergic reactions. Worst case scenarios can result in upper respiratory infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

There are a few things that a person could do to help clean the air in their house. Just by opening the windows in the house will help bring in fresh air and get the pollutants out. Having a filter for the air conditioner system will help control the dust.

Having a good filter to clean the air before it goes through the ac system and re-enters the house is essential. Trane offers a product called CleanEffects. The Trane CleanEffects utilizes patented, breakthrough air cleaning technology to remove up to an astounding 99.98% of airborne allergens and pollutants from the air that passes through the filter.

Having the ducts sanitized throughout the house will help kill the mold and prevent it from growing. Unless the house has metal duct it is impossible to clean the mold off with out destroying the duct.

AC Filters

October 12th, 2010

There are various types of air conditioning filters to choose from. How do you know which filter to buy? Which filters are good and which ones are not highly recommended?

Every system needs an AC filter of some type unless it is a ductless system. In order to keep you’re AC system functioning properly and most efficiently as possible it is crucial to buy a good air filter. Air filters rang from fiberglass to pleat to washables to electronic filters. It truly depends on your budget and how important clean air is to you.

Electronic air filters are the most reliable and effective filter to use on you’re A/C system. They are also the most expensive filter on the market. But you will never have to buy another filter again because they can be rinsed with water or vacuum cleaned.

Washable air filters are everywhere and most people think they are great because they will never have to buy another filter for their air conditioner. But when you try to rinse the dust off you will not be able to clean it all out of the filter. Therefore putting a dirty filter back in.

Fiberglass filters are the cheapest and usually don’t keep much dust out of you’re A/C system. For instance, if you were to take salt and pour it on the filter, 90% of the salt would fall through. This is exactly what would happen when dust gets sucked into your air conditioner.

The most common filter to buy is the pleat air filters. These are in the middle price range and tend to do an excellent job on trapping the dust in the filter. Action Air Conditioning recommends its customers use the pleat filters over the fiberglass and washables. Trane offers a Perfect Fit filter. This is a 5 inch thick pleat filter which only needs to be changed once a year. This is great because you will never have to remember to change the filter every month or two.

The most important thing about your air filter is changing it when it gets dirty. A dirty air filter is not doing the A/C system any good because now the air conditioner has to work harder to cool. Air filters are recommended to be changed once a month, but this can vary on the usage of your air conditioner and the type of filter. A one inch filter may last up to six months before it needs to be changed. If you would like to know more about these different filter options or have any question feel free to contact us.

AC Repair vs. AC Maintenance

August 23rd, 2010

What is the importance of having maintenance done on your air conditioner once a year? What could happen if I don’t get maintenance done every year?

In Tampa, Air conditioning is as important as having transportation around town. If your AC unit breaks in middle of summer in Florida people realize how important air conditioning can be. Most people don’t realize the importance of AC maintenance until their unit breaks and they need a repair.

Maintenance on your air conditioner will include cleaning of the condenser (outside unit) and air handler (inside unit) coils, checking the pressures, cleaning the drain line, inspecting the connections and a basic cleaning of the units (wiping off dirt and dust).

Every home owner should have their AC systems cleaned once a year to help prevent parts from breaking and to help maintain the efficiency of their system. No one would ever drive their car for a year and not change their oil. But people do it all the time with their AC system. Remember that your air conditioning is running almost all day every day during the summertime. A repair could end up costing more then a simple maintenance once a year on your air conditioning system. It costs $59 just to come out to your home and diagnose the problem with your AC. A repair can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars.

By getting maintenance done every year the technician will be able to notify the home owner if they notice an initial problem begging with the central air conditioner. This can make for a simple repair before the problem gets too big. The older the system is the more important it is to get maintenance done yearly to avoid costly repairs.

Signing up for our ESA program is $155 for the first year and $117 for every year after. This program includes discounts on repairs, priority service and no extra charge on the weekends. This is a small price to pay yearly rather then having to pay a thousand dollars for a repair.

Solar Power Air Conditioner

July 6th, 2010

Going green can be as easy as using the suns energy. Solar power has been around for more then 50 years! This is not a new invention, everyone has heard about solar power especially in the past decade. One air conditioning manufacture decided to take advantage of the free electric that consumers can use from the sun.

Lennox is the first and only company in the world to offer a solar powered air conditioner. We all know that living in Florida we have plenty of sunlight all year around. It can also reduce the CO2 emissions by about 7,500 pounds per year. This carbon dioxide comes from the power plants that it takes for your air conditioner to work.

For any more information and to watch a video at Lennox visit: http://www.lennox.com/solar-solutions

This can save the consumer about 50% on their electricity bill. The tax credit of $1,500 or up to 30% is available on this system with a total savings of up to $2,700.

Air Conditioner Tune Up

July 1st, 2010

What is a precision tune up? What are the benefits? How often should this be done? These are just a few questions that most people want to be informed on.

A precision tune up (PTU) is a fancy name for cleaning the indoor and outdoor unit of an air conditioner system. This entails cleaning both coils (indoor and outdoor unit), clean the drain line, check and inspect all wires and connections and make sure the unit is working efficiently. Cleaning the coils on a unit means more than just spraying water to get the dirt off. The coils are constantly sucking in air therefore in bedding and compacting the dirt deep in the coil. A coil cleaning spray should be used to break up the dirt and dust that is deep within the coil and then rinsed thoroughly with water. The refrigerant should also be checked to make sure there are no leaks.

The benefits of having a PTU done on your system will help your system last longer and run the the best it possibly can. Just as the oil in a car needs to be changed every 3,000 miles, an air conditioner needs to be cleaned on a yearly basis. Not having your unit cleaned yearly is compared to not changing the oil in a car for 166,000 miles. Remember that during summer time in Florida an air conditioner is on almost all day.

It is recommended by Energy Star that an air conditioner system should be tuned up yearly. Some companies say that this should be done twice a year, but there is no real need for that. If a company does a tune up once a year and does a thoroughly efficient job the air conditioning system will be good until the following year.
